February 2010

The 28th Annual Western Regional Conference of the California Association for Behavior Analysis, was held in Irvine, CA, February 18-20. Several members of FirstSteps team presented their research, including a symposium on social-communicative skills found in typically-developing children, as well as talks about executive functioning and self-care skills training.

How Much is Enough? - Determining Normative Levels of Social-Communicative Behaviors
In addition to a restricted range of interests, autism spectrum disorders are defined by deficits in language and social skills. Consequently, a considerable focus in autism intervention and research is the development of social and communicative repertoires. Given the current body of literature, clinicians now have a wide variety of empirically-validated tools at their disposal when designing individualized intervention plans for their clients. While the goal of these strategies generally is to increase some given social / communicative skill (e.g., increase spontaneous mands, increase eye contact), clinicians often do not have prescribed normative levels upon which to base their ultimate goals for clients. As such, the purpose of this symposium was to review the limited research to date regarding norms for some of the most commonly targeted skills, as well as describe the results of our own observational studies on the levels of mands and tacts, eye contact, and social initiations and responses among typically developing preschoolers. These results assist behavior analysts in the generation of developmentally appropriate and measurable treatment goals and outcomes.

  • Carmi, K., Stoddard, L., & Berry-Malmberg, D. (2010, February). Determining Normative Quantity and Quality of Mands and Tacts in Typically Developing Preschoolers.  Address presented as part of the How Much is Enough? - Determining Normative Levels of Social-Communicative Behaviors symposium at the 28th annual Western Regional Conference of the California Association for Behavior Analysis, Irvine, CA.

February 2008

The 26th Annual Western Regional Conference of the California Association for Behavior Analysis, held in Garden Grove February 21st-23rd, was an exciting event for the FirstSteps team. Notably, two of our Instructors took the initiative to examine the effects of innovative interventions. First, Lead Instructor Courtney Lanagan sought to extend previous research on the use of tactile prompts (a small vibrating pager) to help children with autism initiate social interaction with peers. In her study, Courtney successfully used a pager prompt and reinforcement to increase a child’s responsivity to comments and questions made by peers in the school setting. In addition, Instructor Steve Ngo designed an ingenious teaching strategy built upon our children’s interests. Specifically, Steve observed that many of our children enjoy imitating things from their favorite cartoons. Therefore, he hypothesized that if cartoons were made to teach new skills, this might be a fun and motivating way to capture a child’s interest while expanding their skill base. Steve created individualized cartoons for some of his clients, and presented his initial findings at the Cal-ABA conference. He plans to further explore this line of work.
