FirstSteps will present a symposium entitled “How Much Is Enough? Determining Normative Levels of Social-Communicative Behaviors in Preschoolers” at the 36th Annual Convention for the Association for Behavior Analysis in San Antonio, Texas on May 29, 2010. We are thrilled to have Dr. Sebastien Bosch from California Unified Service Providers as the discussant for the symposium.

On April 8th, our very own Courtney Tarbox, MS, BCBA was featured on the television series Talk About Parenting with Shirlee Smith Live! Courtney shared her experience as a Program Director with FirstSteps and the joy of seeing our kids blossom with ABA services. Parents, educators and clinicians called in to speak with Courtney live and asked a variety of questions including those related to diagnostic and assessment information, funding and services, and treatment programming.

The 28th Annual Western Regional Conference of the California Association for Behavior Analysis, was held in Irvine, CA, February 18-20. Several members of FirstSteps team presented their research, including a symposium on social-communicative skills found in typically-developing children, as well as talks about executive functioning and self-care skills training.

The 27th Annual Western Regional Conference of the California Association for Behavior Analysis, was held in Burlingame, CA, March 12-14, 2009. Several FirstSteps Program Directors and Lead Instructors presented their research on a variety of topics, including interventions to increase play skills and perspective taking skills, improving compliance with haircutting, and levels of spontaneous communication among typically-developing preschoolers.

The Annual Cal-TASH Confernce supporting Equity, Opportunity & Inclusion for People with Disabilities, occurred in Manhattan Beach on March 6 and March 7, 2009. Clinical Director, Lisa Stoddard, relished the opportunity to present a successful case study of a FirstSteps client as part of the panel discussion, The Autism Learning Collaborative: Interagency Collaboration for Best Practice in Service Delivery, chaired by Soryl Markowitz of Westside Regional Center.

Program Director, Kristen Carmi, presented an informative guest lecture to the students of California State University, Northridge's Principles of Behavior and Learning class. Entitled Clinical Applications in Behavior and Learning, Ms. Carmi informed students in the many ways learning principles may be applied in a clinical setting, such as to help those children receiving services at FirstSteps.

Executive Director, Dr. Jennifer Harris and Clinical Director, Lisa Stoddard, were invited to give a presentation to the Los Angeles Families for Effective Autism Treatment (LA FEAT) on January 12. With the goal of giving parents knowledge to enable them to better participate in their children's behavior intervention programs, Dr. Harris and Ms. Stoddard covered a variety of topics, including understanding the A-B-Cs of behavior, functional assessment, prompting strategies, and suggestions of activities to do while waiting on a wait-list.

Program Director, Courtney Lanagan, presented a guest lecture to the students of El Camino College's class in Working with Children: Autism. Her lecture, entitled, Applied Behavior Analysis: Behavior Intervention for Children with Autism, provided students with an overview of the empirical support for ABA as a treatment of choice for young children with autism, as well as an introduction to some basic behavioral principles.
