Frequently Asked Employment Questions
Q. Does your Instructor training program meet the BACB’s requirements for certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?
A. Indeed it does – and then some!
Q. I am gaining my fieldwork experience toward my BCBA certification. Do you offer supervision?
A. Yes! FirstSteps offers supervision as a benefit for our exemplary Instructors who have met the experience and performance requirements for promotion to Lead Instructor. If you have previous experience with delivering behavior intervention, we can evaluate whether you meet our criteria for obtaining supervised fieldwork and develop an experience plan for you.
Q. Are there opportunities to grow with FirstSteps?
A. Are there ever! The brilliant clinicians leading each of our centers today were our new Instructors of 10 years ago. Exemplary Instructors may be promoted to Lead Instructor, Lead Instructors gaining the necessary education and experience to become BCBAs may be promoted to Program Manager, and after certification, Program Managers may become members of our Program Director team – those who design our beautiful children’s programs and mentor the behavior analysts of the future. FirstSteps is a family, and we are passionate about mentoring compassionate and skilled clinicians who will grow alongside us.
Q. If I need to relocate, am I able to transfer to another FirstSteps office?
A. Absolutely! We hire with the long-game in mind and hope that you see the career opportunities offered at FirstSteps. We have five offices who will welcome you with open arms and plans to add more in the future.
Q. How often are FirstSteps Instructors evaluated and eligible for pay increases?
A. The more experience you gain working with our FirstSteps kids, the more clinical expertise you will develop! As such, we base the timing on our formal evaluations to the number of hours you complete working directly with our kids. You will receive a formal evaluation at least annually with the majority of our team being evaluated 3-4 times in a year.
Q. What qualities and experience does FirstSteps look for when hiring?
A. First and foremost, we want to hire lovely people! We are looking to add staff members who are excited to learn, have a spring in their step, appreciate the wonderful uniqueness of children, who are attuned to others, and are dedicated to contributing positively at work and beyond. If you have prior ABA experience that is a bonus but not necessary.
Q. Please tell me that FirstSteps has an official DEI statement that it endorses, believes in, and lives by?
A. This is the best question ever and the answer is DEFINITLEY YES!! To be our best we absolutely need, want, and love a diverse staff representing all backgrounds and bringing so much beautiful perspective and experience to our company.
Here is our official statement to which every FirstSteps employee subscribes: FirstSteps for Kids, Inc. values diversity, equity, and inclusivity in all aspects of our work – in our service delivery with our clients, in collaboration with families and communities, and in our organizational culture and practices with our staff. We strive to serve a diverse population of children and their families and see a responsibility to address the issue of inequity in access to ABA services across different cultures.
We value the importance of employing diverse staff, and firmly believe that representation of different backgrounds, gender identities, races, cultures, and sexual orientations are integral to providing an equitable work environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
As a service provider employing hundreds of staff to support our children and their families, we believe that we have a responsibility and an opportunity to contribute to social change and a kinder and more compassionate world by living our values of diversity and equity in all of our daily operations. When we provide a more diverse learning environment for our clients and their families, we provide a more meaningful experience for all and contribute toward a more equitable future for everyone.
Q. Does FirstSteps provide CEU opportunities for BCBAs and BCaBAs?
A. We are huge proponents of all forms of education, including continuing education. We provide opportunities for you to complete all your CEUs at no cost to you via webinars, journal clubs, and conference participation.
Q. I am new to the area and hoping to make friends at work. What is the company culture like?
A. We are a collaborative, fun, and supportive group of similarly minded people. We collectively want everyone to thrive, feel welcome, and enjoy working together. Friendships develop quickly at FirstSteps as a result of our shared values and dedication to helping our little ones by collaborating together. There are also many outside of work opportunities provided by the company or set up impromptu by staff whereat you can socialize and build meaningful work friendships.
